Last week, we were able to take some dog friendly time out and head down to Devon. We couldn’t have been luckier with the weather and had a really fabulous time getting to know the South Hams district. We were based in a family flat in Plymouth, but it turned out that many of our day trips took us to locations in that area, rather than all of the other Devon locations we’ve visited in the past. Therefore, we’ve got a few reviews coming up for you over the next week or so.
We find that Betsy the Chihuahua is a great traveller and it’s a good job really! On this occasion, we had to drop our cat off at the in-laws, retrieve our Gran’s cat from them, and then drop him off in Hampshire before even starting on the road to Devon! We often choose to drive down later in the evening to avoid any traffic and this time round had a pretty easy journey down, with just a few pitt-stops, so Betsy could stretch her little legs.
Our Devon days were filled with walks by the sea, lunches in lovely dog friendly locations and the occasional trip without Betsy… because unfortunately dogs are not allowed everywhere! We spent time in Dartmouth, Salcombe and Totnes and many of the shops allowed us to take Betsy in with us. We just had to ask and they were all pretty accommodating. One shop we particularly loved, was Lazy Sundays in Dartmouth. The owner had her own Schnauzer, who spends many of his days in a store full of lovely things. He was simply adorable. It was on her recommendation that we ended up eating at Saveurs the only French bakery and restaurant that we’ve come across (so far) that actually let dogs sit inside with you. We’ll be reviewing it very soon, so keep your eyes peeled.
Many of the beaches in South Hams and Plymouth allow you to take dogs between the months of September and April. We actually printed off this map of dog friendly beaches in Devon and Cornwall, which we’ve found to be of great use. One of the highlights of our trip was finding Stoke beach, which we had all to ourselves for a while and Betsy loved playing on the beach, whilst posing for many, many photos!
We had a great dog friendly break in Devon and can’t wait to go back!
