Gallivant Hotel – Camber Sands

As the Summer months have been approaching, we’ve found ourselves a little more restricted when it comes to taking Betsy the Chihuahua to the beach. Many welcome our four-legged friends, but we’d love it if more of the beaches with seasonal restrictions had Dog Friendly zones. Luckily for us, on a recent trip to Camber, we found ourselves staying at The Gallivant Hotel, which just happens to be right opposite Camber Sands’ very own dog friendly zone. What a perfect location!

The Gallivant Hotel, described as a ‘shabby chic coastal hideaway’ is a converted retro motel, with eighteen rooms and a fabulous ‘Beach Bistro’, serving New England style dishes, using locally sourced produce. Our Coastal Deluxe room was spacious and tastefully styled in beach side colours and driftwood furniture. Tea, coffee and a few homemade biscuits were provided and Betsy – much to her pleasure – had her own dog bowl, bed and toy laid out, awaiting her arrival.

Dogs are made more than welcome at the Gallivant Hotel and they even offer a two-night Dog Lovers Escape Package, which includes a three course Beachcomber sharing dinner for two in the Beach Bistro, as well as breakfast on each morning of the stay. The Coastal Deluxe rooms included in the package have direct access to the large garden area and are situated less than five minutes walk from the beautiful sandy beach. What more could your pooch ask for?!

No dog? Not a problem – Just ask to borrow ‘Camber’, the resident hotel dog and they’ll happily let him take you out for a tour of the Sands.

On our visit, we were treated to a Sharing Menu for dinner, which included a sumptuous collection of dishes, cooked by head chef Trevor Hambley – known for working alongside Marco Pierre White and Jean Cristophe Novelli in London. Our dishes included Smoked Duck Salad with Endives, Oranges and Chilli Orange Dressing; Seared Rye Bay Scallops, Hambley cured Trout with Oyster and Champagne Dressing; Roast Salt Marsh Lamb and the famous Pear Tarte Tatin with Vanilla Ice Cream. Simply devine!

After rolling into bed and having a fabulous night’s sleep in the huge super king sized bed, we were spoiled with yet more delicious food at breakfast. The Gallivant really knows how to make you feel special. Great food is definitely one route to our hearts! A slightly later breakfast would have been ideal (after our wine inductance dinner the night before), but alas, breakfast is served between the hours of 7.30 and 9.30. We’re glad we made it however, as the delicious bacon sandwich and scrambled eggs with salmon, as well as an array of fruit, yogurt and cereal really set us up for the day ahead!

The Gallivant Hotel really is in the ideal spot for dog owners. You can’t beat being a few minutes walk from the beach, and the spacious rooms are perfect for your four legged friends. We loved it and definitely recommend you stop by with or without man’s best friend.

Points to Note:
We struggled to get the WIFI at a good speed in our room, which was one of the furthest rooms from reception.
We also struggle to get much 3G coverage in the area -  It maybe best to just take a break from the internet and relax by the sea instead!
The Gallivant Hotel is the perfect base for visiting the lovely town of Rye
…Or why not head to the Chapel Down vineyard just down the road.
Dogs are welcome in the rooms outside of the main building.

We were guests of The Gallivant Hotel, but we speak the whole truth and nothing but…

was Betsy allowed in the dining room with you or did she stay in the room while you ate ?

No dogs in the dining room, but we’re told when the weather’s warmer, there’s seating outside on the patio and dogs are more than welcome to join you there!
