Ipswich was never really meant to be on our initial list of dog friendly places to stay, but when Alex came across the Salthouse Harbour Hotel online, it looked to good to miss! This 4 star boutique hotel in Suffolk is situated on the marina, which was perfect for Betsy the Chihuahua and ourselves, making for a lovely walk and wonderful views.
The hotel itself is a converted merchant’s warehouse and many of the original features are apparent. It is full of contemporary artwork, wonderful furniture and lots of quirky little features, including a full suit of armour and a scattering of industrial units. It gives off a lovely impression when you enter and you definitely feel that you could set up residence for some time.
On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by the exceptionally friendly staff in the reception area – Check-in was seamless, we were offered a wake up call (no thanks) and a newspaper for the morning… They even asked us if we needed a hand with our bags, which we thought was a lovely touch, considering we only needed to walk a few meters to the lift and a short way to our room!
We had booked a Salthouse room, which was £100 for bed and breakfast. There is usually a supplement of £5 for a dog, which was wavered for our stay, on this occasion. The room itself was huge, giving plenty of space for small, medium and larger dogs to move around in – As long as your larger dog is not size of a horse then you’ll be fine! We were lucky enough to have views of the marina and even with the window open, we did not suffer from any noise disturbance from the street down below.
Now, if I’m going to be really picky then I’d have to say that I didn’t feel as though the bathroom in our room oozed boutique luxury. Alex liked it and there really wasn’t a thing wrong with it, I just felt that it seemed quite clinical. It came with some wonderful products though, which will always wins brownie points from us! I’d also have to say that the room we were in could have probably done with a bit of a refresh - A few small stains in the carpet and a bit of a tattered chair let me down a little – Nothing that can’t be fixed, but something that this picky little lady noticed.
We had a fabulous night’s sleep in a more than comfortable bed, and were offered a delicious breakfast in the morning. Unfortunately we didn’t eat at the hotel for dinner, but if the breakfast was anything to go by then we’re sure it is worth the taste test sometime in the future. Check out was at the more than reasonable time of 12pm and breakfast was served until 10.30am, which is something we always appreciate, being a late morning people!
Would we stay again? Yes.
