The Ship Inn – Rye

On a recent trip to Camber, we took the afternoon out on a gloriously sunny day to spend some time in Rye. Our Twitter friends had informed us that The Ship Inn was a more than pleasant place to stop and eat with dog in tow, so that’s exactly where we found ourselves for our late lunch with Betsy the Chihuahua.

The Ship Inn allows dogs (and kids) in all areas of the pub, and there is a water bowl by the bar so your pooches can refresh after their walk around town. Not many of the pubs in the area appeared to be dog friendly, so we were glad to have found one that was spacious, lively, decorated in a stylishly quirky way and with extra cheery dog friendly staff.

Built in 1592, the Ship Inn is a building steeped in seafaring history. Originally used as a warehouse for storing contraband seized from smugglers, the 16th Century building (complete with wooden beams and original flooring) now houses a collection of nautical paraphernalia set alongside modern furnishings.

As for the food, The Ship Inn say they like to use ‘good quality, local, sustainable or organic ingredients, and [aim] to stay closely connected to the seasons’.  They offer breakfast/brunch, lunch and dinner menus and we were there to sample lunch – Between us we tried the Chicken & tarragon terrine, toasted potato & thyme bread and Homemade cheeseburger, onion rings, BBQ relish, hand cut fries with bacon. Unfortunately the both dishes came in under seasoned, but were enjoyable enough nonetheless. The chips were great and the house wine went down a treat.

We had a nice time at the Ship Inn, but wouldn’t say it’s the best pub grub we’ve ever eaten. From what we could hear from the surrounding tables it seems that that food was a bit hit and miss. We were adequately satisfied when we left, but couldn’t help feeling that a few minor changes would make this place a great place to eat.

We give the Ship Inn a Dog Friendly 8/10. One of the few locals you can take your dog along to, but a few tweaks needed when it comes to the food.
